Science fiction growth-chart takes your kid from Tribble to Vader

Science fiction growth-chart takes your kid from Tribble to Vader: "
This geeky dad made a growth-chart for his daughter that allows her to log her height against Star Wars and other science fiction franchise characters. It comes as a seven-foot-tall PDF, in case your kid happens to grow to Darth Vader heights.

These Robot Quadrocopter Jugglers Perform For Your Amusement… For Now

These Robot Quadrocopter Jugglers Perform For Your Amusement… For Now: "

If you’ve watched some of our previous robotic quadrocopter coverage you’ll have seen these little choppers fly through hoops and interact with humans in fairly mundane ways. Now I’d like you to watch this video of two quadrocopters sharing a nice game of catch. They target the ball and throw it back to the thrower and once you have two in the same pen they start throwing the balls to each other. The result? Mirth and merriment!

Google Nexus Tablet by LG in pipeline for mid-Summer launch?

Google Nexus Tablet by LG in pipeline for mid-Summer launch?: "

Google is reportedly working with LG on a new self-branded device, only this time it’s a tablet rather than a smartphone. The “Google Nexus Tablet” (name not confirmed, mind) will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb and, according to Mobile-Review, is expected to launch in mid-summer or early fall.

LG, of course, already has its own Honeycomb tablet, the LG Optimus Pad/T-Mobile G-Slate. However, according to the rumors, Google is looking to prepare a core Android reference design tablet, which would be first to get OS updates in the same manner as the Nexus line of smartphones, and only LG – out of the known, key Android tablet manufacturers – was willing to agree to the search giant’s terms.

Apparently the project is already underway, though there’s no word on carrier support or whether Google will look to sell the Nexus Tablet direct. Similarly, specifications are currently unknown.

Fringe renewed for season 4

Fringe renewed for season 4: "
Fringe

Fears that Fringe may be on its way out have been proven false. For Fringe season 4 will be going ahead…

While several other genre shows have struggled over the past year or two (No Ordinary Family, FlashForward, Dollhouse), the one that's really grown has been Fringe.

Overcoming an uneven first season that saw it relying a little too heavily on the monster of the week mechanic, seasons two and three have been really very strong. Packed with excellent storytelling, some tremendous ideas, and the genius creation that is Walter Bishop, Fringe has become must-see television.

Earlier this year, it was moved to the Friday night death slot in the States, the place in the schedules where, more often than not, shows don't tend to survive in. And yet, Fringe may just have proven the exception to the rule.

For it's now been confirmed that the show has, indeed, won itself a fourth season run. The news was dropped via the Twitter feed of executive producer Joel Wyman, who simply wrote 'Fringe was picked up!!!! Thanks Fringedom!'

It's unclear, thus, how many episodes season four will have, but the news here is nonetheless good. Fringe will, indeed, be returning again in the autumn. And while it continues its rich vein of form, long may the show continue...

Update: we've now learned that it's getting a full 22-episode season 4 order.

Why you should watch the Doctor Who series 6 teaser closely: "
Doctor Who series 5

The 15 second teaser trailer for Doctor Who series 6 might just contain a hidden detail that you may have missed. Click here, and look just a little closer…

Yesterday, the BBC released the first 15 second teaser trailer for Doctor Who’s sixth series. It was dismissed by some as not really very much, and written off. But, as with many things Who, it pays to look closely.

We’re indebted to the site UnlimitedRicePudding for drawing this to our attention, but depending on where in the country you live, you got a very slightly different version. To illustrate this, two pictures, courtesy of victor_02 on the Gallifrey Base forum.

The first is from the version of the trailer that’s been put online, which we posted yesterday. Here’s the crucial screencap…

And then, depending on where in the country you were, and what channel you were watching, you might have seen this version on your telly yesterday…

Can you spot the difference? The silence really is coming...

Terry Pratchett and Terry Jones to produce Discworld TV crime drama

Terry Pratchett and Terry Jones to produce Discworld TV crime drama: "Terry Pratchett and Terry Jones are collaborating on a new TV series that will feature criminal investigations in Discworld, with the city watch. It sounds awfully cool, despite the best efforts of Rod Brown, Managing Director of Prime Focus Productions to present it as cynical corporate drivel ('the globally successful Discworld franchise will readily translate to the small screen in the form of a high-end, mass appeal weekly drama series...'):

The main focus of the series will be set in the bustling, highly mercantile, largely untrustworthy and always vibrant city of Ankh-Morpork and will follow the day-to-day activities of the men, women, trolls, dwarves, vampires and several other species who daily pound its ancient cobbles (and, of course, Igor in the forensics department).

Terry commonly refers to the City Watch police force series as 'the jewels in the Discworld Crown.' These richly developed and highly compelling characters will feature in a 'crime of the week' episodic storyline. As each weekly adventure unfolds, viewers will be taken on a ride through Pratchett's genius imagination, with the author overseeing the creation of the series, where wild and exciting encounters with werewolves, dragons, dwarfs, trolls and golems and the classic heroes and villains, are an everyday occurrence...and where many of these characters even make outstanding crime fighters!
